Crustaceans can bring in the Barramudi

There are certain elements that we know do affect fishing. One of them is rain, something that the whole country, except for the Top End is in very short supply of at the moment.

On the East Coast of Australia there are many rivers and lagoons that flow into the sea. When it rains, these rivers bring down an abundance of food for fish such as prawns, small mullet and other livebait and don’t the predators know this. They sit at the mouth of estuaries waiting for these “Meals on Wheels” to arrive. Fish like mulloway or jewfish, Australian salmon, flathead, tailor and sharks to name a few are to be found gorging on the continuous food supply as the rivers disgorge the water into the sea..
Impoundments and dams rely on rain to keep them topped up. Due to the severe drought over the eastern half of Australia, some dams and inland impoundments are down to less than 5% capacity. This of course puts an incredible stain on the resident fish population and usually means the next hatch is less to cope and future generations end up stunted.

Rain is an important factor for fish, especially barramundi in the Northern Territory. The big wet season which goes from approximately November through to February fills up all the creeks, rivers and drains to overflowing. Once again, small fish, prawns and crustaceans are washed in and the every hungry barra know this. The best fishing is to be had immediately after the big wet, although it’s almost unbearable with high temperatures and extremes of humidity.
As the weather cools around May/June and the creeks and drains run dry, the barra go deep and start to bite shyly.
