WHAT IS THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN AUSTRALIA?
Chris from Hawthorne, QLD

The coldest temperature ever recorded in Australia was -23C at Charlotte Pass, in the Snowy Mountains, on 29 June 1994. Temperatures this cold are quite rare in Australia but are more likely in the Polar regions during winter.

A FREAK COOL CHANGE HAS HIT BROKEN HILL, WHERE DID IT COME FROM AND HOW DID IT HAPPEN?
Chantelle from Broken Hill, NSW

Yes Broken Hill has seen a few significant weather events so far this season. However, I wouldn't describe it as a 'freak' cool change because these types of systems are normal at this time of the year (January). You may not see them every year and then there may be years, like this one, where the atmospheric conditions are well suited. To get severe storms you need moisture in the atmosphere (we are seeing quite a bit coming down from the active monsoon over northern Australia); instability and something that will trigger the thunderstorms. Cold changes provide an excellent trigger for thunderstorms to develop and then these can go on to produce damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain.

WONDERING WHY PROSERPINE CAN GET BELOW 10 DEGREES AND THE ISLANDS DON'T GET BELOW 20? WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THIS?
Heath from Proserpine, QLD

Proserpine is a little inland - just enough not to be influenced by the sea when winds are coming from the west. As soon as the effect of the ocean is taken away, and we only have a land influence, minimum overnight temperatures can plunge much lower than any nearby island (where the ocean influence is always there)

This is all changed if there is a high mountain on the island - temperatures there can certainly get cold because of altitude.

YOUR CHANNEL AT 8:30PM TONIGHT REPORTED NO RAIN FOR MACKAY. i HAVE RECORDED 37MM SINCE 9:00AM. WHERE IS YOUR RAIN GAUGE? UNDER AN UMBRELLA?
Ian from Bucasia, QLD

The Mackay rainfall observations come from the Bureau of Meteorology's observations stations in the area - one in Mackay itself and the other at the airport. The rain recorded at the airport was from a light shower that fell between about 10.30 and 11am however the radar shows me there have been some heavier showers in the area.

Judging from your postcode you are near Mackay but not near the reporting points therefore it is quite likely that one of these heavier showers went over your property but missed the recording stations both in Mackay and at the Airport. This is a very common occurrence because rain never falls in an even pattern and depending on the type of cloud cover the rain imbalance between locations can be even more marked than what you have observed.
