Darwin weather
Darwin's weather is characterised by two distinct seasons, namely a dry season and a wet season.
The dry season takes place during the southern hemisphere winter, with drier winds from the southeast moving across the city from inland Australia.
In the southern hemisphere summer, winds are reversed, with northwest winds bringing in moist, tropical air from the Arafura Sea.
This northwest 'monsoon' creates periods of intense rainfall. Tropical Cyclone activity also occurs between November and March.
Most famously Tropical Cyclone Tracey crossed Darwin on Christmas Eve 1974, creating widespread destruction through the city.
65 lives were clamed and it still remains one of Australia's worst natural disasters.
