Rainfall in Australia

As we look at the average rainfall across Australia, the reason for our vegetation patterns, and therefore largely our climate, becomes abundantly clear.

We see that the eastern coastal fringe of the mainland, as well as the southwest corner and much of Tasmania, normally experiences abundant rainfall. The heaviest rainfall zones are around the tropical northern coast of Queensland and the western half of Tasmania. Bother of these areas have locations that normally experience rainfall in excess of 3000 mm per year.

However, as we move inland and away from the coast over the mainland, rainfall rapidly decreases until we enter the great deserts of Australia, which typically experience average rainfall of less than 250 mm per year.
