Snow report
Despite marginal temperatures, frequent winter snowfalls across the Australia Alps support a short ski season, running from early June to early October.
The majority of snow falls near cold fronts embedded in the prevailing belt of westerly winds over southern Australia during winter. Snow also falls from cut of lows, cold pools and NW cloud bands.
The average winter snowline is around 1500 metres on the NSW and VIC Alps but can drop to below 1000 metres in cold outbreaks. The peak snow depth at Spencers Creek (1830 metres) averages around 180cm but shows high inter annual variability.
The best season on record was 1981 with a peak snow depth of 361cm.
The worst season was 2006 with a peak depth at Spencers Creek of only 85cm.
Unfortunately a warming trend over the past 50 years is leading to a gradual decline in the yearly snow depth.
