Sydney weather

Sydney has a temperate climate, with warm and humid summers and fairly mild winters.

Rainfall is distributed fairly evenly through the year, although the driest time is in early spring.

The average rainfall in the driest month, September, is 69mm.

The wettest month on average is June at 131mm.

A weather phenomena known as an 'East Coast Low' can often deliver heavy rainfall, gale-force winds and large surf to Sydney late in autumn and early in winter.

Severe thunderstorms are also a feature during late spring and summer.

One of these severe thunderstorms in 1999 was the costliest natural disaster in Australia, when large hail stones struck eastern suburbs of the city and the CBD.

Extensive damage was done to cars and roofs of houses by large hail stones. Damage from this weather event was estimated to have cost the insurance industry over A$1,000,000,000.
