Heavy rain for northern NSW

Another pulse of cloud is extending across much of NSW today with significant falls (15 to 25 mm) over the northern inland. Good totals are also expected for the southern inland of Queensland.

This rainband will extend eastwards on Saturday with further falls of 10-15 mm for the Maranoa/Warrego, the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and the eastern inland of NSW. A rainfall "bullseye" is still indicated over the NSW North west Slopes and Plains where local flash flooding is expected on Saturday morning.

Two-day totals (today and tomorrow) indicate widespread totals of 15 to 25 mm across these areas with local heavy falls. A flood watch is current for some northern river systems of NSW.

During the weekend, two cold fronts are expected to blast across Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW producing strong winds, rain, and much colder temperatures. The Sunday front is the more intense and should produce useful snowfalls on the NSW and Victorian ski-fields ¬ perhaps 15 to 20 cm. Snow is expected to extend down to around the 800 m level. Thunderstorms with small hail are also expected with this front.

These fronts will clear away the cloud from northern NSW and southern Queensland, replacing the existing tropical air with cooler, drier air from the south.

Watch for the issue of severe weather warnings and sheep graziers alerts across the weekend because of these fronts.
